How to Solve One-Step Equations

## Practice Problems

1) Solve for $x$.

$x - 23 = 8$

Add both sides of the equation by $23$.

2) Solve for $n$.

$n + 2 = 9$

Subtract both sides of the equation by $2$.

3) Solve for $k$.

$9k = - 27$

Divide both sides by $9$.

4) Solve for $a$.

${\Large{a \over 2}} = 6$

Multiply both sides by $2$.

5) Solve for $y$.

$y + {\large{1 \over 4}} = {\large{1 \over 2}}$

Subtract both sides by $\large{1 \over 4}$.

6) Solve for $m$.

$0.25\,m = 2$

Divide both sides of the equation by $0.25$.

7) Solve for $d$.

${\Large{2 \over 3}}d = 10$

Multiply both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of the coefficient. The coefficient is $\large{{2 \over 3}}$, therefore the reciprocal is $\large{{3 \over 2}}$.
8) Solve for $r$.
${\Large{r \over {0.5}}} = 30$
Multiply both sides by the decimal number $0.5$.
