How to Solve One-Step Equations
Practice Problems
1) Solve for [latex]x[/latex].
[latex]x – 23 = 8[/latex]
Answer
Add both sides of the equation by [latex]23[/latex].

2) Solve for [latex]n[/latex].
[latex]n + 2 = 9[/latex]
Answer
Subtract both sides of the equation by [latex]2[/latex].

3) Solve for [latex]k[/latex].
[latex]9k = – 27[/latex]
Answer
Divide both sides by [latex]9[/latex].

4) Solve for [latex]a[/latex].
[latex]{\Large{a \over 2}} = 6[/latex]
Answer
Multiply both sides by [latex]2[/latex].

5) Solve for [latex]y[/latex].
[latex]y + {\large{1 \over 4}} = {\large{1 \over 2}}[/latex]
Answer
Subtract both sides by [latex]\large{1 \over 4}[/latex].

6) Solve for [latex]m[/latex].
[latex]0.25\,m = 2[/latex]
Answer
Divide both sides of the equation by [latex]0.25[/latex].

7) Solve for [latex]d[/latex].
[latex]{\Large{2 \over 3}}d = 10[/latex]
Answer
Multiply both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of the coefficient. The coefficient is [latex]\large{{2 \over 3}}[/latex], therefore the reciprocal is [latex]\large{{3 \over 2}}[/latex].

8) Solve for [latex]r[/latex].
[latex]{\Large{r \over {0.5}}} = 30[/latex]
Answer
Multiply both sides by the decimal number [latex]0.5[/latex].
